SAN ANTONIO NONPROFIT CREATES A DIVERSE ARTS COMMUNITY

Ocotillo Films works with brands and nonprofits to tell stories about the important work they’re doing. When planning for this project with Luminaria, we wanted the viewer to connect with their mission and feel inspired by artists in San Antonio, Texas.

You can watch ‘Art Connects Us’ here.

Luminaria produces one of the most unique art festivals in the country, but their mission is much more diverse.

Anyone should be able to use art to express themselves. Fostering a diverse arts community is critical to not only keeping San Antonio a vibrant city but an inclusive one.

Luminaria creates diverse opportunities for artists through funding, professional development, and more. They wanted to show that impact through the people they impact, and we were excited to tell that story.

Jenelle Esparza is an interdisciplinary artist focusing on the intersection of Mexican and American culture. She was a 2020 Luminaria Artist Foundation grantee for her project Through the Threshold – an exhibit honoring her grandmother.

In Jenelle’s studio, old farming equipment, tapestries, and fabric litter the walls, each piece tells a story about where she comes from. By meticulously and intentionally designing each piece, she combines the present with the past.

Jenelle’s art gives voice to the voiceless. We wanted to capture that by using close-ups of her hands, eyes, and materials during her work.

Juan Flores makes up half of Phages — an artistic collective that mends music and visuals with real-time coding. In 2019, they had an installation on the Riverwalk during the Luminaria Contemporary Arts Festival.

Growing up in San Antonio, Juan always gravitated to art. His first paid project was painting a mural in his neighborhood during high school.

When Juan saw his installation in 2019, he was elated. We were able to show that moment of triumph and reflection by filming Juan in the exact location he performed.

For nonprofits, making videos that clearly establish your organization’s purpose is powerful. It allows people to find common ground and connect with your brand.

Luminaria’s been able to repurpose this video multiple times on social media and email marketing because it’s a story that will always be true for them.

Whether you are pushing an annual fundraiser, end-of-year campaign, or something in between, telling an authentic story about the work you do will always resonate with your audience.
